Universities have a critical role to play in this transitional period in world history. With Next System Studies, we embrace both the challenges and the possibilities of universities in advancing democratic system change. To that end, our research focuses on several interrelated subject areas, including:

  • civic engagement and academies in the public interest,
  • community wealth building and solidarity economies,
  • racial, economic, and gender equity,
  • climate resilience and a just transition,
  • municipal and bioregional federations,
  • constitutional design and movements,
  • abolition and conflict resolution, and 
  • digital democracy and cooperation.
