Dr. Matt Burke and Hannah Gokaslan, both of the University of Vermont's Leadership for the Ecozoic at the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics at the University of Vermont, will join the Next System Fellows to discuss degrowth as a strategy for system change and next system design. Dr. Matthew Burke is a Research Assistant Professor with Leadership for the Ecozoic at the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics at the University of Vermont. His work addresses relationships linking society and nature specifically as related to energy, ecology, economy, and food. Matthew completed a Ph.D. in Renewable Resources — Environment at McGill University. His work looks at just transition, ecological restoration, political economy and ecology, food systems, science-technology-society, bioregions.He is also an Affiliate of the Gund Institute for Environment.
Hannah Gokaslan is a Ph.D. student in the Rubenstein School of the Environment and Natural Resources. Hannah spent four years in Dena’ina Ełnena (Anchorage, Alaska) before returning to the Northeast and joining the UVM community. Hannah's current work focuses on northern and Arctic regions, drawing on science and technology studies, environmental humanities, and critical energy scholarship to interrogate visions of just transitions and explore post-extractive futures.
